We recently published a systematised review examining the clinical potential of breath analysis for detecting disturbances in glucose metabolism. Across 30 studies, we evaluated approaches for detecting diabetes, prediabetes, insulin resistance, gestational diabetes and hypoglycaemia, as well as for estimating blood glucose. The review highlights particularly promising results for hypoglycaemia detection, while also identifying important limitations in current evidence, including small cohorts, limited external validation and substantial heterogeneity in sampling and analytical methods. Our findings underline the need for standardised protocols and clinically targeted validation before breath-based approaches can be translated into routine practice.
