Biography
Lilian Witthauer is an Assistant Professor with Tenure Track in Diabetes Technology at the University of Bern, where she leads the samlab. She received her PhD in Experimental Physics from the University of Basel, a Master’s degree in Physics from the same University, and a Master of Advanced Studies in Medical Physics from ETH Zuerich. Before joining the University of Bern, Lilian Witthauer worked as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, where she developed new phosphorescence-based oxygen sensors for improved assessment of compartment syndrome in the group of Professor Conor Evans at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine.
Throughout her academic career, Lilian Witthauer has focused on the development of optical sensors and technologies for medical applications, including optical navigation sensors based on shadow imaging and Fiber Bragg Gratings and a planning system for virtual reality surgery planning. She also has thorough experience in the analysis of large data sets and building of electronic and optical experimental setups from her time as a particle physicist at the electron acceleration facilities MAMI in Mainz and ELSA in Bonn.
In addition to her research, Lilian has also taught and supervised students at the Bachelor, Master, and PhD levels, including lecturing on medical imaging and digital signal processing.
