Camilo Mendez successfully defended his PhD

Camilo Mendez successfully defended his PhD in Biomedical Engineering and became the first PhD graduate of the samlab.

January 14, 2026

On 14 January 2026, the samlab celebrated a special milestone:

Camilo Mendez successfully defended his PhD in Biomedical Engineering and became the first PhD graduate of the samlab. His dissertation, “Towards Contactless Detection of Nocturnal Hypoglycemia in Diabetes Using Machine Learning: From Smartwatches to FMCW Radar”, addresses one of the most critical and under-recognized risks in diabetes care: undetected nocturnal hypoglycemia. The work bridges wearable sensing, contactless radar technology, and machine learning, and lays the foundation for new non-invasive monitoring approaches in clinical and home settings.
